A prostate infection can be caused by a number of different factors, including bacteria, sexually transmitted diseases and bladder obstruction or injury. This condition, which is also known as prostatitis, is the most common prostate-related medical issue experienced by men under the age of 50, explain health professionals at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Contact your doctor immediately if you develop any of the symptoms of a prostate infection.

Back Pain

If you have an infection within your prostate, you can develop sensations of pain within your back or abdomen. Painful symptoms associated with a prostate infection can occur suddenly and may vary in severity from mild to severe. These symptoms can be long-lasting (chronic) and may occur intermittently in some men.

Urgent Urination

The presence of an infection within the prostate can cause significant irritation and inflammation. These symptoms can lead to swelling and can cause your prostate to press into your bladder, which sits immediately above your prostate. If this occurs, you can experience increased urinary urgency or frequency. You might also notice that you are unable to excrete a strong stream of urine during urination. Increased urinary urgency due to a prostate infection is most commonly experienced at night, explain health professionals at the National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse. Despite these symptoms, a prostate infection can make it difficult for you to completely empty your bladder---a condition called urinary retention.

Pain during Urination or Ejaculation

A prostate infection can cause painful symptoms to emerge during urination or ejaculation in some patients. Sensations of pain can be characterized as burning, sharp or achy and may occur intermittently.

Blood in the Urine

An infection within the prostate can lead to the excretion of blood within the urine (hematuria). If this occurs, you may notice that your urine appears orange or red in color. White blood cells, which are generated by your immune system in response to a prostate infection, can also be excreted in your urine, causing your urine to appear cloudy or discolored. Your urine may also emit an abnormally strong or foul odor if you have a prostate infection.

Fever

Fever can occur as a symptom of a prostate infection in some men. Your body's immune system raises your body temperature to prevent bacteria from replicating and spreading throughout your body. Symptoms associated with fever can include chills or flushing (reddening) of the skin.
