Lisinopril is a medication in a class of drugs called ACE (angiotensin-converting enzyme) inhibitors. Brand names include Prinivil and Zestril. It is used in the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by decreasing certain chemicals that tighten the blood vessels, so blood flows more smoothly and the heart can pump blood more efficiently, states Medline Plus. There are side effects associated with lisinopril that you should be aware of.

Headache and Dizziness

You may experience headache and dizziness while taking lisinopril. These effects may be worse if you take it with alcohol or certain medicines, reports Drugs.com. You should use caution while driving or operating machinery until you know how this medication may effect you. Over time, these effects may diminish as your body adjusts to lisinopril.

Cough

Cough is a common side effect of ACE inhibitor medications. Throat lozenges may be helpful to alleviate cough. If cough becomes bothersome contact your health care professional.

Decrease in Sexual Ability

You may experience a decrease in sexual ability or sexual desire while taking lisinopril. If these effects begin to impact your daily lifestyle speak with your health care provider.

Allergic Reaction

In rare cases, lisinopril may cause a severe allergic reaction. Symptoms include rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the hands, eyes, mouth, face, lips or tongue; and hoarseness, reports Drugs.com. If you experience any of these symptoms while taking lisinopril seek emergency medical attention.
