Understand that proper breathing takes practice and repetition, like any other physical activity. Although this is something you you do every day because it is critical to life, you may not always perform the act of breathing properly. The more efficient your breathing is, the more efficiently your body can function. In short, if you take the time to learn how to breathe properly, you might feel better.

Step 1

Sit, lie down or stand in a comfortable position. If possible, find a quiet place to do this. Wear clothing that is not restrictive around your chest.

Step 2

Locate your diaphragm. It is at the bottom of your ribs and above your belly.

Step 3

Inhale through your nose. Pull air in with your diaphragm. Your stomach will expand more than your chest. Count to 4 or 5 to pace yourself.

Step 4

Exhale slowly through your mouth or nose. Exhaling through the mouth may be more relaxing for you. The air should come out more slowly than it went in. Count to 7 or 8 to help pace yourself.

Step 5

Concentrate on your rate of breathing. Go slowly.

Step 6

Repeat and practice breathing. Concentrate on what you're doing.
