Depression can be a debilitating illness for both the person affected and their loved ones. According to the National Alliance for Mental Illness, 15 million American adults, or approximately 5 to 8 percent of the adult population, are affected by major depression. If you are affected personally or if someone you care about is, it is important to know that there are a variety of support services and resources available to you.

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance

DBSA is a patient-directed national organization with a website that provides comprehensive information for patients and family members affected by depression and bipolar disorder. Information about mood disorders and related diagnoses accompanies online screening for different conditions such as depression, mania and anxiety. You can find statistics and different publications such as brochures and books, and their website provides access to online support groups or how you can locate a support group in your area. You can also find information on how to help a loved one that is in crisis. With the Wellness Tracker, you can track your mood, symptoms, lifestyle changes and medications. The Facing Us module on their website offers information as well as a place where you can journal and create a wellness plan or wellness book.

NARSAD

NARSAD supports research related to mental health illnesses. They have a user-friendly website with a variety of resources. A specialist is available whom you can email or call with questions about psychiatric illnesses and for resources. The website notes current research related to mental health issues, as well as information about different mental disorders including depression, childhood disorders and other disorders.

The National Alliance on Mental Illness

NAMI provides a large amount of information on different mental illnesses. They provide a service called Ask the Psychiatric Pharmacist online, as well as specific information about different psychiatric medications. Specific to depression, they have specific information for women, veterans, cultural groups, gay, lesbian, bisexual transgendered persons, children, adolescents and seniors. There is a depression quiz, information about treatments and frequently asked questions.

The National Institute of Mental Health

The NIMH provides a variety of online resources. This includes information about depression, how to get help and research information. They have publications that are available in Spanish. Information on topics such as the different types of depression, causes of depression and what to do in crisis are also available.
