Detox diets offer you the promise of cleaning your body from the inside out; removing toxins that cause fatigue, dull skin and hair, weight gain and aggravate health problems. You are exposed to these toxins every day through the food you eat, the air you breathe and the chemicals you use to clean your body and your home. Although there are many detox alternatives to choose from, a 30-day detox offers you a chance to really change your eating habits and lifestyle.

Features

The most sensible way to approach a 30 day detox diet is to focus on consuming whole foods like vegetables, fruits, certain lean meats and whole grains, as noted by Registered Dietitian and CBS contributor Keri Glassman. Almost every detox diet requires you to eliminate certain foods like caffeine, alcohol and refined sugars. Some diets, like medically supervised elimination diets, also ask you to exclude wheat, chocolate, meat, shellfish and corn. In most detox diets, raw vegetables and fruits are emphasized for their high nutrition, fiber content and antioxidants. Exclusively raw food detox diets such as the "The Raw Food Detox Diet" by nutritionist Natalia Rose, emphasize a gradual switch to eating only organic fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. A serving of fish and skinless, organic poultry are sometimes permitted once a day or as seldom as once a week. Unprocessed whole grains, such as brown rice and Quinoa, may also be included in some 30 day detox plans.

Supplementation

Some 30 day detox diets recommend you take certain herbal supplements to help the body excrete toxins. The "4-Week Ultimate Body Detox" by holistic nutritionist Michelle Schoffro Cook, recommends a supplement known as Cellfood, which contains dissolved oxygen, electrolytes, ionic minerals, enzymes and amino acids to help eliminate fat stores.

Benefits

According to Cook, eating a healthier, cleaner diet and eliminating junk food for 30 days can give you more energy, clearer skin, decreased bloating. In addition, if tthe plan you follow restricts calories, you may also lose weight.

Expert Insight

Gastorenterologist, Michael Picco, M.D. says the body adequately cleanses out toxins without the need for special diets or supplements.

Considerations

You might find it difficult to eat out or enjoy social gatherings because of your dietary restrictions. If you select a diet too low in calories or nutrients, you might begin to suffer from fatigue, lack of energy in your workouts and become depleted in certain nutrients. If you choose a 30 day detox, review it with a registered dietitian or a medical professional.
