If you shave your bikini area, there is a chance that you may get some ingrown hairs. The pubic area, or bikini area, is one of the most common locations for ingrown hair in women, according to the Mayo Clinic. Ingrown hairs occur when hair curls around and grows back into the skin. Because the ingrown hair irritates the skin, you may experience pain or itching in the area, or you may notice a bump that might contain pus in the area. Getting rid of ingrown bikini hairs requires a few simple materials and a little patience.
Step 1
Wear loose-fitting clothing once you notice the ingrown hair, according to Epigee.org. Cotton underwear should be worn while you have ingrown hairs in the bikini area, as this will minimize the risk of fabric rubbing against the area and irritating it even more.
Step 2
Soak your bikini area in the hottest water you can stand by sitting in a tub of water up to three times per day for five to 10 minutes per session. If this isn't possible, you can apply a hot compress to the affected area.
Step 3
Apply 1 percent hydrocortisone cream to the bikini area if it itches, states Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer, as these may vary from one product to another. It is important not to scratch an ingrown hair, as this may cause the area to become infected.
Step 4
Remove the ingrown hair if you can see the loop of hair between the natural hair follicle and the spot where the hair grew into the skin. Slide a needle sterilized with alcohol under the loop of hair. Pull up gently on the hair until the ingrown hair is removed from the skin. Don't pull the hair out of the natural hair follicle, as this may cause another ingrown hair in the same location when it grows back out.
Step 5
Protect yourself from infection after you remove the ingrown hair by applying an over-the-counter antibiotic ointment on the affected bikini area.
Tips and Warnings
- To minimize your risk of getting an ingrown hair in the bikini area, shave with a single-blade razor from the pubic bone down. Angle the razor slightly toward the center line of the bikini area so you are following the natural line of hair. If you notice that you get ingrown hairs every time you shave your bikini area, consider using clippers to trim the bikini hair instead of shaving it.
