Razor bumps, which go by the scientific name pseudofolliculitis barbae, occur when a hair grows and then grows back down into the skin. If you have curly, coarse or thick hair you're more likely to develop razor bumps after shaving. Often times, black men develop razor bumps on their chins and neck, and women develop them in the bikini area due to friction from underwear and tight-fitting clothing. However, there are ways you can prevent razor bumps when shaving. If you've already developed razor bumps you can use astringents and creams for razor bumps to bring out the hairs.

Step 1

Wet the area to be shaved for about 5 minutes with warm water. It's easier to shave wet hair. You will get a closer shave if you thoroughly wet the area--that way you don't have to shave over the same area more than once. Shaving the same area over and over can cause irritation.

Step 2

Exfoliate the area with an exfoliating scrub on your bikini area or a scrub made especially for the face. This removes dead skin cells and will help get a closer shave. You can also use a loofah on your bikini area if you do not have an exfoliating product. Exfoliating can free up any ingrown hairs.

Step 3

Shave in the direction of your hair growth. Shaving in the direction opposite of your hair growth can take off more than the thin layer of skin that is usually removed, causing nicks. Nicks and cuts increase the chance of developing razor bumps.
