Acid reflux can be very uncomfortable, and often feels like a burning sensation in your chest (heartburn). It is treated with a variety of medications, though many of these take hours or even days to have their maximum effect. For example, proton pump inhibitors work by blocking stomach acid production. They are very effective, but it will take three to seven days to feel any significant relief from these medications. Fortunately, there are several remedies that will quickly alleviate acid reflux symptoms.
Staying Upright
Acid reflux is worse when you lie down because stomach contents can flow into the esophageal area more easily. Stay upright after meals. If you want to take a nap, do it sitting up in a chair. Raise the head of your bed with blocks or risers so the upper part of your body is higher while you sleep overnight. The National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NDDIC) recommends raising it by eight to 10 inches. NDDIC warns that just raising your head on stacked pillows will not help.
Antacids
Antacids are quick remedies for acid reflux because they neutralize stomach acid on contact. Medications like Tums and Rolaids, which come in a chewable form, start to work as soon as you swallow them. You can take them as soon as you feel acid reflux symptoms, and relief usually starts within minutes. They are also good sources of calcium.
Foaming Agents
Gaviscon is a special type of over-the-counter antacid that works by preventing, rather than neutralizing, acid from reaching the esophagus. This medication, which comes in chewable and liquid forms, foams up and covers the contents of your stomach. This happens instantly to give you quick relief. Your esophagus will come in contact with the harmless foam rather than corrosive acid.
H2 Blockers
H2 blockers like Pepcid reduce stomach acid production. They were originally available by prescription only, but now can be purchased in a reduced over-the-counter strength. They are not quite as fast as antacids or Gaviscon, but FamilyDoctor.org states that you should feel relief within an hour.
