Basketball is a court sport with many types of movement that require ankle and foot support. The type of basketball shoe a player wears is important for stability during the game, depending on the court position. Some players perform quick lateral or jumping movements while others run as fast as possible when controlling, passing or getting the ball.

High-Top Shoe

The high-top is a basketball shoe that comes up over the player's ankle. These shoes provide maximum ankle support, excellent cushioning and comfort especially for a center position player who is rebounding or scoring and landing on the court. The high-top shoe is heavier than others so it means a player can lose speed, but the design protects the ankles more. It also restrains movement somewhat with more resistance to bending the ankle.

Mid-Top Shoe

The mid-top basketball shoe comes just to the ankle level. Some basketball players prefer this style for moderate ankle support and cushioning. This is the most common basketball shoe.

Low-Top Shoe

The low-top basketball shoe is lightweight and does not restrict the ankles. This is good for fast players like the guard position. Since the shoe is lighter it lets you move faster, like a running shoe, although regular running shoes are not recommended for basketball. The low-top does not provide ankle support, only moderate support and flexibility with less cushioning offered in favor of more speed and maneuverability.
