The cuticle of your hair resembles overlapping shingles on an exterior roof. A healthy hair cuticle lies flat and takes on a smooth, shiny appearance. Damaged hair cuticles resemble cracked and broken shingles that give your hair a dull, lifeless and frizzy appearance. If you have frizzy hair that lacks luster, combat the problem by following a maintenance routine that can help smooth the cuticle and repair the damage that heat styling, chemical processes and over washing have caused.

Step 1

Wash your hair every other day, or every third day instead of every day. Washing your hair too much can strip your hair of moisture and cause it to frizz. Use a shampoo specifically designed for damaged hair that can help soothe the cuticle and control frizz.

Step 2

Condition your hair after you wash it. A conditioner that contains wheat, corn proteins or rice will help repair damaged hair cuticles. Deep conditioning once week will help increase the moisture content in your hair and scalp.

Step 3

Wash your hair with warm water. Rinse with cool water. Do not use hot or cold water, which will dry out your hair's cuticle. A cool water rinse after washing will seal the cuticle, reducing frizz.

Step 4

Use a wide-toothed comb when you comb your hair. Combs with teeth that are close together can snag the hair and cause cuticle damage. Applying a detangler to your hair will help to reduce knots, making it easier to comb through your hair.

Step 5

Allow your hair to air dry instead of drying it with a hair dryer. Drying your hair with a hairdryer can make the ends brittle and lifeless. Applying a leave-in conditioner and letting your hair dry naturally will decrease the likelihood that your hair will frizz.

Tips and Warnings

  • Tame your frizzy hair with a banana and avocado mask. Mash up one banana and ½ avocado in a small bowl. Apply the mask to your hair, comb it through and place a plastic cap over your head. Leave the hair mask on for 10 minutes. Rinse with cool water after a 10-minute waiting period.
  • Do not rub your hair with the towel after you wash your hair. Gently blot your hair with the towel, instead. Vigorous rubbing will open the cuticle and cause frizzy hair.
