When the cavities around your nasal passages become blocked, this creates an optimal environment for a sinus infection to take hold. Sinus infections can be caused by viral, bacterial or fungal infections and exacerbated by a variety of medical conditions, such as allergies and the common cold. Mayo Clinic experts state that unless sinus infections are severe or chronic, there's no need for medical intervention or use of oral antibiotics. You can treat a sinus infection (sinusitis) naturally at home.

Steam

Inhaling warm steam can assuage sinus pressure and help you breathe better. The Mayo Clinic suggests holding your head over a large bowl of steaming hot water while draping a towel over your head. Also, you can take a hot shower. Dr. Andrew Weil, integrative physician, recommends putting a hot, warm cloth over the upper half of your face numerous times a day for 10-minute intervals.

Nasal Lavage

Nasal lavage is a popular natural home remedy for sinus infections in which you use a bulb syringe or neti pot to rinse your sinuses with salt water. Weil describes a neti pot as a "device shaped like Aladdin's lamp" in which you direct saline into your nostrils. Weil recommends using a mixture of 1/4 tsp. salt per each cup of warm water. After inhaling a small amount of saline, make sure to spit it out.

Hydration

The American Academy of Family Physicians advises sipping on hot fluids, as well as drinking an abundance of fluids, such as juice or water, which makes mucous secretions thinner and results in quicker drainage. Stay away from caffeine, advises the Mayo Clinic, as well as alcoholic beverages, which can make your symptoms worse.

Alternative Medicine

In lieu of antibiotics, Weil recommends taking astragalus to enhance the functioning of your immune system. Astragalus, which is derived from the root of a plant that's native to China, can be purchased in capsule form at many health food markets. Weil states that the "usual dose" is two capsules twice daily, unless the product specifies otherwise.
You may have heard that oil of oregano can be helpful in treating sinus infections. Mayo Clinic experts indicate that oil of oregano, like many herbs and spices, has antibacterial/antifungal properties, so it's "plausible" that this herb can be helpful for sinus infections. However, there have been no medical studies conducted on oil of oregano for this use, so its benefits are unknown.

Rest and Relaxation

Getting plenty of rest is important whenever your body is fighting off an infection. The AAFP points out that if you lie flat, this may cause your sinuses to become more congested. When you rest or sleep, lie on the side of your body that allows you to breathe the easiest. Sleep with your head slightly elevated to promote sinus drainage.
