Heartburn is the unpleasant and often painful feeling that occurs when acids in the stomach irritate the lining of the esophagus. A simple home treatment to ease the effects of heartburn can be made from baking soda, a common household product. Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate, an alkaline substance that reacts with acids. When dissolved in water and taken internally, baking soda will neutralize stomach acids, relieving the discomfort and pain of heartburn quickly and easily.
Step 1
Measure 1/2 level teaspoon of baking soda, according to directions at ArmHammer.com. Add the baking soda to four ounces of water in a drinking glass and stir the mixture.
Step 2
Ensure that the baking soda mixture is completely dissolved and that your stomach is not overly full with food or drink, to avoid injury to the stomach.
Step 3
Drink the mixture. Repeat this every two hours, or as directed by your physician.
Step 4
Take up to seven 1/2 teaspoons, or three 1/2 teaspoons if you are over 60 years old, per day. Limit the use of the maximum daily amount to less than a two-week period.
