Shaving is one of the most common methods to remove pubic hair, or hair around the bikini line, according to the Palo Alto Medical Foundation. Unfortunately, shaving is also one of the most common causes of ingrown hair in this area. If you notice an ingrown hair, you probably won't want to wear your bikini. It is usually possible to treat the ingrown hairs at home; however, if you get ingrown bikini line hairs every time you shave, you should contact your doctor to find out if you need prescription medications.
Step 1
Apply a hot compress to the area or soak in a warm bath three times per day to soften the bikini line hairs. The water should be as hot as you can stand it but not so hot that you get burned.
Step 2
Wash the area using benzoyl peroxide soap twice per day, states MotherNature.com, to help control the inflammation and prevent infection.
Step 3
Use 1 percent hydrocortisone cream to the bikini line to help control itching that is associated with ingrown hairs. As the hair grows into the skin, the body fights it as it would a foreign body. This causes a red bump that may be pus filled. This bump may hurt or itch. Scratching the area may cause the area to become infected.
Step 4
Wear cotton underwear while the ingrown hair heals. Additionally, Epigee states that you should wear loose clothing while the area heals. Tight clothing may cause the area to become more irritated.
Step 5
Use an alcohol-sanitized needle to remove the ingrown end of the hair. Don't dig into the skin to do this. You should wait until you can see a loop of hair extending above the skin.
Step 6
Minimize the risk of infection by applying triple antibiotic ointment after you remove the ingrown end of the hair.
Tips and Warnings
- You can minimize the risk of getting ingrown bikini area hairs by using shaving gel and a single-bladed razor to remove hair in the direction it naturally lays as it grows out, states the Mayo Clinic. If you experience chronic ingrown hairs in the bikini area after shaving, consider chemical removal or using an electric shaver to remove hair.
