Astragalus is a herbal remedy derived from the roots of the perennial plant astralagus membranaceus. It is a type of bean or legume used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. According to Emedtv website, astragalus is used to treat chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. Astragalus is a powerful antioxidant that may enhance the immune system, increases the peristaltic action of the intestinal wall and improves elimination. However with all its benefits, astragalus has its side effects.
Allergic Reaction
An allergic reaction rarely occurs when taking astragalus, however; individuals who have a history of allergy to other legumes are more at risk to developing an allergy to astragalus. An allergic reaction can be a serious medical emergency with symptoms of a rash or hives with itching, swelling of the face, tongue or throat, along with wheezing, shortness of breath and difficulty breathing. Immediate medical attention must be sought for any of these symptoms.
Gastrointestinal Side Effects
Gastrointestinal side effects may range from common symptoms such as nausea, bloating and upset stomach along with gas and diarrhea. There may also be more serious gastrointestinal side effects including, difficult or painful swallowing, passage of bloody or black stools or the failure to have bowel actions; these signs and symptoms require prompt medical care and attention.
Additional Side Effects
Additional side effects reported while taking astragalus include hypotension (low blood pressure) and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels). Individuals being treated for hypertension will need to be monitored closely by their health-care professional while taking astragalus. Diabetics taking astragalus will need their serum blood sugar level to be closely monitored by their health care professional and medication adjustments may also be necessary. According to Cancer.org, astragalus may interfere with blood clotting; therefore doctors have warned patients having surgery, those taking blood thinners or aspirin-like drugs not to take astragalus.
Negative Effects
Astragalus should not be taken before a discussion with a health care provider while pregnant, breast feeding or planning to get pregnant. To avoid drug interactions a discussion with a health-care provider about any medications or over the counter drugs being taken is important. In addition individuals with an autoimmune disease like rheumatoid arthritis or multiple sclerosis or who have had an organ transplant need to have a discussion with their physician before taking astragalus.
