No matter if you are a budding Major League Baseball home run hitter or a weekend warrior, you will need a well-made baseball bat. You can make your own wooden baseball bat and be hitting home runs in no time.

Step 1

Purchase a piece of high-quality wood approximately 6 by 6 by 36 inches. choose a wood that has a close grain. The tighter the grain, the tighter the wood, which will result in a stronger bat. Ash is a popular choice for baseball bats and can be purchased at a lumber yard.

Step 2

Find the center of the piece of wood using a center marker. Hold one end of the wood firmly against the back edge of the center marker and strike the wood with a second piece of wood. An indentation will form, which will serve as the centering mark. Rotate the piece of wood 90 degrees and strike it again, marking the center of the wood blank. Do the same thing on the other end of the wood bland. There should be a clear “x” marked in the center of each end of the piece of wood. This will ensure a perfectly balanced bat.

Step 3

Line up the center of the piece of wood to the drive center on a large lathe. The wood must be spinning smoothly. If it is not spinning smoothly, it is not balanced and you must repeat Step 2. Continue spinning the wood on the lathe and use a 1 ½ inch roughing gouge to sculpt the bat to the desired size.

Step 4

Use a skew to complete the defining and shaping of the baseball bat. You can shape the round edge of the handle and top of the bat by using a spindle gouge. Turn the handle against the gouge carefully and slowly. Finally, use an electric sander to smooth the bat.

Step 5

Spray the bat with a varathane clear spray. Once the bat has dried, smooth it out by rubbing it gently with steel wool. Spray another coat of varathane and let dry for at least 48 hours.
