Natural Pain Relief Remedies

Natural home treatments for pain relief may be as effective or better than prescription drugs and their side effects. Researchers at the American Pain Society report that patients found alternative treatments for chronic back pain, joint pain, headaches and sinus pressure capable of bringing release from moderate pain. If you don't want to get hooked on prescription or over-the-counter medications, you can test some natural self-care methods to see which ones your body likes best.

Ice

Flexible gel packs provide natural cold therapy without the sting of real ice. When kept in the refrigerator, you can place packs directly on your skin for the most intense action in the painful area. For severe headaches or muscle strains, home treatments of 20 minutes with a cold pack can provide immediate relief. Repeat as necessary during the day. For chronic back pain or joint pain, doctors suggest preceding cold therapy with heat.

Heat

Alternating hot and cold therapy creates a soothing effect on aching joints and tense muscles. As a home treatment for back pain, the dual nature of this method addresses deeply placed muscles, such as the iliocostalis lumborum, and displaces excess blood flow caused by inflammation. Use a gel pack warmed in the microwave for 20 minutes or take a hot shower prior to applying ice.

Diet

Through adjusting your diet, you can achieve long-term pain relief. A deficiency in a nutrient that is important to regulating muscle function, such as potassium, can leave you vulnerable to strains or accidents. If you have osteoporosis or another bone disease, getting enough calcium can initiate bone or joint pain relief. The U.S. Department of Agriculture suggests eating a diet rich in low-fat meat, fish and dairy products, whole grains, fruits and vegetables to achieve good nutrition naturally.

Support

Muscle and joint strains and sprains weaken the affected area, and moving it usually causes pain. Support strained areas with a compression bandage. Reusable ones are self-stick and easy to apply. If you've injured a knee or an ankle, home treatment can include a cane or another walking aid. Back pain can be reduced with a semi-rigid wrap brace. Arm pain relief may require immobilization with a sling.

Exercise

A natural pain reliever that is effective for any discomfort is exercise. Over time, stretching and exercise increases flexibility and strength. If you've had a severe injury or untreated chronic pain, doctors at the Maryland Spine Center suggest swimming as a beginner exercise, once you've healed adequately. Create a stretching and exercise routine with your doctor to prevent future pain episodes.
