Flomax is the commercial name for the drug Tamsulosin. This medication is prescribed for men experiencing benign enlargement of the prostate, also referred to as BEP. This condition, in which the prostate gland becomes enlarged, usually occurs in middle-age or elderly men.
Sexual Dysfunction
Flomax use can result in decreased sexual abilities in males taking this medication, which may include impotence or even priapism (a serious condition in which an unusually prolonged and painful erection occurs, according to the Mayo Clinic). In addition, some users may also experience what is referred to as "retrograde ejaculation." This condition occurs when ejaculate is redirected to the male urinary bladder, rather than following its normal path to the urethra. Decreasing Flomax dosages or using the product intermittently may help alleviate these types of side effects. Consult a physician if you experience any of these sexually related issues.
Lowered Blood Pressure
Tamsulosin has the potential to reduce certain patients' blood pressure. Some users may report feelings of dizziness and lightheadedness when using Flomax. Specifically, drops in blood pressure might be experienced when users move quickly from a prone to a standing position. If you're taking medications meant to treat high blood pressure or if you already suffer from a pre-existing low blood pressure condition, consult your doctor before beginning Flomax treatment.
Ocular (Eye) Issues
Vision-related side effects have been reported in some Flomax users. Some people have experienced what the American Optometric Association refers to as amblyopia, or "lazy eye"--in which visual information isn't properly transmitted via one's visual/neural systems. In addition, Tamsulosin has the potential to hurt the pupils of patients who are undergoing cataract surgery by contributing to a condition called "floppy iris syndrome." If you're taking Flomax and are scheduled for this sort of ocular surgery, inform the surgeon so she can make the necessary surgical technique modifications in order to decrease the risk of pupil damage.
Allergic Reaction
Rashes, facial swelling, breathing difficulties, and red or irritated eyes may be potential signs of a severe allergic reaction to Flomax or Tamsulosin. If you experience any of these symptoms, seek medical care as soon as possible.
Infections
Some Flomax users may experience infection-related issues such as diarrhea, generalized weakness, fevers or chills. Symptoms of infection may resemble those similar to an influenza-like virus. As with any negative side effects you experience when using Flomax, contact your prescribing physician with any questions or concerns.
