Naturalists and homeopaths have long advocated the use of tea to prevent and treat illness. Rooibos is a tea derived from a South African shrub by the same, which means "red bush" in the local language. The Koishan tribe drank roiboos tea for hundreds of year, believing in its health benefits. Dutch settlers used the tea as a cheap alternative to importing tea from China or India. In addition to its health benefits, rooibos is a good source of potassium, magnesium and calcium.
Antioxidant
Antioxidants protect the body's cells from corruption. Oxygen molecules, when not contained in cells, are free radicals which erode healthy cells. Rooibos tea is a natural antioxidant, as it contains polyphenol. Polyphenol prevents cell mutations and inflammation. Inflamed tissues in the body can lead to pain, swelling and promote the onset of disease.
Nutrition
Rooibos teas are packed with minerals and nutrients. The tea has high levels of potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, copper and manganese. Rooibos also contains sodium; its consumption replaces essential electrolytes to keep the body hydrated.
Colic
Mothers seeking a remedy for a colicky baby have long mixed rooibos with milk and given the mixture to their infant. The tea's natural flavonoids and hydrating properties can settle the baby's stomach and prevent dehydration.
Skin Rejuvenation
Zinc and alpha hydroxy acids are natural elements of rooibos tea. The duo rejuvenates skin and repairs damaged skin cells. You can drink the tea or apply it directly to the skin. Steeped tea bags can be dabbed on acne, sunburn or dry skin.
