A scan of the skin care products that line the shelves of the health and beauty aisle can be intimidating. With so many to choose from, it can be hard to know which products are necessary and affordable for your needs. Skin care doesn't have to be complicated or costly. Some of the best things you can do for your skin don't cost a thing.

Sun Protection

One of the best things you can do for your skin is to wear sunscreen and limit the time you spend in the sun. Years of unprotected sun exposure can lead to premature wrinkling, age spots and dryness. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends that you apply a sunscreen with an SPF factor of at least 30 every day of the year. Stay out of the sun during the middle of the day when the sun's rays are the most intense.

Gentle Cleansing

Long, hot showers or baths may feel soothing to the skin but they can remove oils and lead to dryness. Wash your skin in warm water and limit the time you spend bathing or showering. Use mild cleansers rather than strong soaps that can take away too much oil from your skin. When you are finished washing, pat your skin dry. Leave your skin a little damp to help lock in moisturizer.

Moisturize

You don't have to buy the most expensive lotion on the shelf to effectively moisturize your skin. Use a product that is recommended for your skin type, doesn't contain alcohol and improves the look and feel of your skin. Plain petroleum jelly can effectively treat rough, dry feet, elbows and hands. The AAD advises you not to allow more 12 hours to elapse between using some type of lotion or sunscreen on your skin. Purchasing moisturizing products that contain sunscreen can save you money and reduce the time you spend applying products.
