The website Science Made Simple explains that when you remove your hat and it brushes against your hair, a positive charge builds up on each strand of hair. Now electrically charged, individual hairs attempt to get as far from one another as they can, causing the hair to stand on end. Static is more prominent in the winter when the air is dryer. When the air is humid, typically during the summer, moisture in the atmosphere prevents static charge.

Step 1

Increase moisture in the air. In your home, put a humidifier in each room. If you have a radiator, keep a pan of water on the radiator at all times. The heat from the radiator will help the water evaporate into the air. It could take several hours for enough moisture to accumulate.

Step 2

Wear hats, shirts and sweaters made of natural fibers. Synthetic fabrics pick up more static charge compared to natural fibers. Dry your synthetic and natural clothing separately.

Step 3

Condition your hair daily and shampoo your hair only two or three times a week. Hair that's fine and dry has more problems with static electricity compared with curly, thick and oily hair. On the days between shampooing, conditioner and styling products will keep your hair weighed down. On the days you shampoo, you'll notice static electricity in your hair more prominently.

Step 4

Use a fabric softener in the dryer. It won't eliminate static electricity altogether, but will help minimize it. Before putting on a hat, run a dryer sheet over the material on the inside of the hat. You can also run the fabric-softening sheet over your head, if you don't mind the fragrance.

Step 5

Allow your clothing to partially air-dry. It will help the fabric absorb some of the moisture.

Step 6

Spray a small amount of hairspray on your head. It should instantly neutralize the positive charge of the static electricity. Spritzing some hairspray onto your hair prior to combing will also help prevent static electricity.

Step 7

Apply moisturizer to your hands and run through your hair. Moisturizer will help neutralize positive charges and weigh hair down.
