How to Wear a Cervical Collar

A cervical collar is a firm brace worn around the neck to limit range of motion and movement of the neck. Also referred to as a C-collar, the brace is worn in instances of trauma or surgery. Depending on the type and severity of the injury, a person may have to wear a collar for several weeks. Improper wearing of a C-collar causes skin irritation and possible increased injury. Ask a friend or relative to assist with placing the brace properly around your neck if needed. Avoid driving when wearing a C-collar due to limited mobility and range of motion.

Step 1

Lay down on your back. Turn your body to the side. Keep your head and neck in alignment with the front of your body. Pull up long hair or beard so it is not between the collar and skin.

Step 2

Place the collar behind the back of your neck. Ask for assistance if collar placement is difficult. Ensure the collar is placed correctly. Look for identification features--the collar is labeled front and back as well as with arrows pointing upwards.

Step 3

Roll onto your back. Keep the collar centered and in place. Hold the front portion of the collar by the left and right sides; position the center of the collar directly under the chin. Do not place the sides of the front of the collar on the collar bone; instead, place angled upwards towards the ears.

Step 4

Secure the front of the collar to the back piece. Wrap the ends around the back and into the back portion of the collar. Attach with Velcro straps or buckles. Adjust straps until they are equal in length on both sides.

Step 5

Test to ensure the collar fits properly. The neck should be immobilized. Inspect the chin area; the chin rest directly on the collar--not inside the collar or over the edge. Look to see the opening of the collar is centered directly over the center of the neck. Examine the collar and ensure all skin is directly touching padding on the collar and not the plastic.

Step 6

Remove collar once a day for cleaning. Ohio State University Medical Center suggests cleaning the collar and neck area while showering. Wash both the collar and neck with mild soap and water. Pat dry to remove all moisture. Clean pads daily. Wash in basin or sink. Allow to air dry for about an hour. Collars come with extra sets of pad so one set can be cleaned while the other is worn.
