The emunctory system of the human body includes the skin, urinary, digestive and respiratory systems. The emunctory system allows for excretion or the cleansing of unwanted elements such as carbon dioxide or waste products in stool, urine and sweat. There are ways you can help strengthen and support the emunctory system, so it can help you maintain optimal health.
Step 1
Lace up your running shoes and hit the pavement for a brisk run or walk. The key is to get the blood moving and the sweat pouring out. The skin plays a large role in protecting our organs from the outside world, but it also excretes unwanted toxins through sweating.
Step 2
After a hot shower, rinse with cold water. It is invigorating, improves circulation and is a healthy, easy way to aid the digestive system in eliminating toxins. According to naturopath and priest, the late Sebastian Kneipp, the healing properties of water optimize health by helping the body eliminate waste. Alternating between hot and cold water improves circulation and in turn may improve digestion and spur regular bowel movements.
Step 3
Increase your fiber intake and sprinkle ground flax or hemp seeds onto cereal, rice, noodles, or into a smoothie. Add colorful vegetables or fruits to every meal. Fiber binds onto toxic substances and carries them through the digestive system to be eliminated.
Step 4
Carry a reusable bottle filled with filtered water with you all the time. If plain water doesn't do it for you, add lemon, orange or cucumber slices, or drink herbal tea (this adds nutrition, too). The kidneys are responsible for cleansing the blood by removing toxins and waste through the urine. It is vital to drink clean water to help in this process. Drink at least eight to 10 glasses a day.
Step 5
Stop and consciously take three deep breaths in through your nose, several times a day. Most people have a tendency to breathe shallowly without realizing it. Slow, full breaths help expel carbon dioxide and drive more energizing oxygen into your cells.
