Many kids who play organized baseball look up to the professional players they see play on TV and in major league stadiums, but while the ball is not thrown or hit at the same high speeds in youth baseball as it is at the professional level, it can still cause damage, and players must wear protective equipment in order to keep themselves safe.

Playing Equipment

All players need a baseball glove or mitt to catch the ball. They need a bat to hit the ball, and need to wear shoes with extra traction called spikes when they are on the field of play. Bats in youth baseball can be up 32 inches long. There are no limitations on gloves. Youth players must wear rubber or plastic spikes.

Batter's Protection

All players must wear batting helmets when they are up to the plate, on base or in the on-deck circle. The batting helmet must cover the head fully and must have protective coverings for the ears. A protective facial mask is optional, and is encouraged by many leagues.

Catcher's Gear

All catchers must use a catcher's mitt, and wear a catcher's mask, a chest protector and shin guards. Catchers are encouraged to wear an athletic supporter with a protective cup. The catcher's mask can be a traditional cage mask or a hockey goalie-style mask. Catchers can also wear leg savers that fit over the back of the calf muscles in order to keep the legs from tiring out.
