5 Things You Need to Know About Natural Treatments For Bronchial Asthma

1. A Word to the Wise

While there are many natural treatments for bronchial asthma, it is important to remember that not all treatments work the same for everyone. While it is great to reduce dependence on prescription medications by using natural remedies for bronchial asthma, it may take lots of trial and error to find a remedy that is both safe and effective for you. Additionally, for your own safety, speak to your doctor before you begin alternative treatments and/or discontinue use of your prescription medications.

2. Omegas, Oh My

Omega 3 fatty acids, as found in fish, evening primrose oil, borage and flax seeds has an anti-inflammatory effect, which may help to relieve irritation on the bronchial tubes and reduce the symptoms of bronchial asthma. You can add more Omega to your diet by increasing your intake of fresh fish, such as salmon and tuna, adding flax seeds to your morning cereal or using flaxseed oil on salads. Omega is also available in supplement form; however, you should not exceed more than 2.5 g each day.

3. Pure Pineapple

Pineapple contains a substance called bromelain which also has anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that bromelain can reduce bronchial inflammation in animals with allergies which cause airway diseases, such as asthma. While fresh pineapple is the best source, bromelain is available in supplement form and should always be taken in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. In some cases, bromelain can cause upset stomach and should not be taken if you happen to be allergic to pineapples.

4. Mighty Magnesium

Magnesium helps to dilate the bronchial tubes and can help to reduce the number of asthmatic attacks. While it is easy to get magnesium through a healthy diet, strangely enough, studies have shown that magnesium deficiencies are common among asthmatics, so regular supplements may be helpful in treating asthma. Most doctors recommend between 300 and 700 mg daily of magnesium chloride, beginning with a smaller dosage and increasing if necessary.

5. Learn to Love Licorice

Licorice root extract has fast acting anti-inflammatory properties and has been used for centuries in the treatment of bronchial asthma. Once again, follow the manufacturer's or your doctor's directions for dosage. Unlike other asthma treatments, licorice root can be used to help stop an asthma attack once it has already begun; however, if you do not experience fast results, keep your prescription inhaler handy.
