Some people consider the taste of peppermint to be very soothing, and therefore it is used in products such as candy, gum, toothpaste and tea. In addition, peppermint essential oil is sometimes used to treat medical ailments. It can be a very effective remedy for conditions such as gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome and even some skin conditions.

Gas and Bloating

Gas and bloating are experienced at one time or another by most people. However, many do not realize that gas and bloating can be naturally treated by using peppermint oil. Adding a few drops of essential oil to a drink can help you relieve painful gas and bloating. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, peppermint helps to relax the gastrointestinal muscles that relieve gas by allowing your body to pass it more easily. Many people prefer to use this more natural method than turning to expensive prescription or over-the-counter treatments containing harsh, unnatural chemicals.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a painful gastrointestinal condition that causes bloating, soreness, diarrhea, constipation, backaches and fatigue. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, various studies have shown that enteric-coated peppermint capsules can be very useful in treating the symptoms of IBS. In addition, the University of Michigan Health System reports that peppermint oil and caraway oil can be combined and taken three times a day to reduce gas production and to ease intestinal cramping.

Skin Conditions

Many people suffer from skin conditions that cause itching and irritation. Peppermint oil can be a unique and natural way to heal these symptoms. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, when peppermint oil is applied to the skin, it has a cooling and soothing effect. This method can be used to treat symptoms caused by skin conditions such as hives, poison ivy, poison oak and even dry skin. To use this method, you may want to dilute the essential oil with mineral oil or water. This is especially important if you have sensitive skin.
