Eucalyptus oil is obtained from the evergreen eucalyptus tree that is native to Australia and is now cultivated worldwide. The oil itself can be used topically for treating conditions such as cough, cold, sinus problems, arthritis and muscle soreness. A word of caution: Never take eucalyptus oil internally because it can be deadly.

Arthritis

Arthritis can be a very painful condition for many people. Hundreds of products are sold for the treatment of arthritis. However, like many people, you may have never realized that you can make your own remedy for this condition using eucalyptus oil. According to the Mayo Clinic, eucalyptus oil produces sensations of hot and cold that can distract your attention from the arthritis pain. Rubbing a few drops of this essential oil onto the areas of your body affected by arthritis can quickly help to reduce the pain that you feel.

Cough, Cold and Sinus

Eucalyptus can be readily found in many over-the-counter treatments and even some cough lozenges for the treatment of cough and cold. However, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center, you can make your own remedy at home by taking fresh eucalyptus leaves or a drop or two of the essential oil, and boiling them in a tea to gargle. This gargle solution will help relieve the symptoms of a cold, such as sore throat, and may even help to relieve your cough.
The essential oil can also be rubbed on the chest for relief of chest discomfort and tightening. You can also help sinus problems caused by a cold by breathing in vapors made with a drop or two of eucalyptus essential oil and a cup of boiling water. You can even add a little peppermint to the inhalant for an extra punch.

Pulled Muscles

Eucalyptus oil is often used by athletes to help treat sore, strained or pulled muscles. The essential oil is used in unison with massage to help relieve the pain and tension often felt after a long workout, game or competition. According to the University of Michigan Health System, eucalyptus-based rubs have been found to warm the muscles of athletes. This can help to relieve minor muscle soreness, aches and pains. However, more research needs to be done to fully understand the benefits of this treatment.
