Many commercial cosmetic products contain ingredients that benefit the skin, but they also contain harsh chemicals that guarantee a long shelf life. If you long for a more natural approach to skin care and want to make your own facial beauty mask, try using an apple. According to the June 30, 2009, issue of the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the USA.," apples contain the phytochemical phloretin. Melbourne Dermatology explains that phloretin helps prevent the degradation of the skin's elastin, promotes the renewal of skin cells and prevents age spots. A facial beauty mask made with apple will benefit any skin type.
Step 1
Wash a fresh, ripe apple and cut it into chunks. You do not need to peel the apple, as the skin contains many nutrients you can benefit from. Discard the apple core.
Step 2
Put the apple chunks in a blender and put it on the "puree" setting. If the consistency of the apple is too thick to pour it, add 1 tbsp. water to the blender and blend again. Add 1 tbsp. at a time until the consistency is like applesauce.
Step 3
Pour the pureed apple into a sealed container.
Step 4
Take 1 tbsp. of the apple puree and put it in a bowl with 1 tbsp. of wheat germ. Mix well. If there are large chunks of apple skin in your mix, discard them when measuring the puree.
Step 5
Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and then rinse it with hot water. Apply the apple mask with your fingers and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse well with lukewarm water.
Tips and Warnings
- Pure, no-sugar added applesauce can be used if you do not have a blender. If you do not have wheat germ, place some rolled oats into the blender for five seconds. Oatmeal is a soothing skin ingredient and can act as a binder for the beauty mask, just as wheat germ does.
- Use a mesh sink strainer when rinsing the apple and oats over your sink, as these ingredients can clog a drain.
