Dry and brittle hair can occur as a result of product use. Harsh chemicals and styling tools can strip the hair of moisture and give it a brittle texture. To prevent brittle hair, limit the use of hair dryers, flat irons, hot rollers and curling irons. Chemical processing should also be avoided if possible. If you are unable to improve brittle hair at home, speak to a stylist. There are deep conditioning treatments available to improve dry and brittle hair.
Step 1
Wash your hair less often. Daily shampooing can strip the hair of the moisture needed to improve texture. Instead, shampoo every other day.
Step 2
Choose a shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for dry and brittle hair. If your hair is brittle, you should use a mild shampoo and a conditioner with added protein to improve its appearance.
Step 3
Dry your hair by hand with a towel. Place a small amount of beer in a spray bottle and saturate the hair. Beer can give brittle hair a healthy and shiny appearance. As the hair dries, the smell of the beer will go away.
Step 4
Place mayonnaise on the hair on a weekly basis. Mayo is a cheap alternative to an expensive salon deep conditioning treatment. Place the mayo from the roots to the ends and leave on for 5 to 20 minutes before rinsing.
Step 5
Get a trim. Your hair is the driest and most brittle at the ends. Taking a couple of inches off can improve the appearance and get rid of split ends. Keep up to date on your haircuts by getting a trim every six to eight weeks.
Step 6
Protect your hair from environmental damage. According to the Mother Nature website, dry hair should not be exposed to harsh winds and UV rays. Cover the hair when outdoors with a hat year round.
Step 7
Replenish dry and brittle hair by doing a weekly hot oil hair treatment. You can purchase a hot oil kit at a local pharmacy or hair supply store. Warm the oil by placing the tube into a container of hot water for one to two minutes. Spread the oil from the roots to the ends and leave on for two to five minutes. Rinse and shampoo as normal.
