After many years of sun exposure, it's normal to develop a few age spots over time. Also known as liver spots, these pesky blemishes can be rather unsightly, especially if you develop several of them. Even so, you can erase age spots by taking a few steps toward better care of your skin and using products that encourage spots to fade and blend in with the rest of your skin.

Step 1

Use a skin lightening cream on your age spots. Tretinoin or Retin-A is commonly prescribed for treating skin discoloration, wrinkles and even acne. Apply this cream every day and you will notice a change in the skin's appearance over several weeks.

A bleaching cream like hydroquinone may also be prescribed to fade your age spots, though it will fade the pigment of the entire treated area as well. It is not recommended for those with darker pigmented skin.

Step 2

Apply a chemical peel to your age spots to help them fade. Peels are usually made of an acid-like glycolic acid and work to peel the top layer of skin off over time. With repeated treatments, this will help the age spots fade and create a more even skin tone.

Step 3

You can use home remedies to erase age spots. Cut up a lemon and rub the juice over the spots. This will fade them over time. Just soak a cotton ball in lemon juice and swipe over the spots twice a day for eight weeks.

Rubbing onion slices over the spots is another possibility, because onion is acidic as well and can fade age spots with regular use.

Step 4

Undergo dermabrasion to sand off the top layer of skin. This will create an open wound, that when it heals, will reveal smoother, more even-toned skin. Several treatments are often needed to remove the age spots entirely.

Step 5

Have laser treatments performed on your age spots. The laser will destroy the pigment cells in the treated area, greatly reducing the appearance of darkness over time. Several treatments are usually required to remove age spots.

Step 6

Undergo cryotherapy. Often used in removing warts, liquid nitrogen is applied to age spots to freeze them and encourage that area of the skin to die and fall off. Though you will remove your age spots, the tradeoff is that you could form scars.
