Washing your face seems like it should be simple, but if you are not careful, you could be doing it wrong. And while incorrectly washing your face will not cause permanent damage, a few simple changes might improve your complexion significantly. The important factor to remember when cleaning your face is to avoid anything that will irritate or harm your skin. Try to be thorough with your washing procedure.
Step 1
Choose an appropriate cleanser for your skin type. Do not use a bar soap, since these are often too harsh for facial skin. Instead, choose a liquid, foaming or cream cleanser designed for dry, oily or combination skin, depending on your skin type.
Step 2
Pull back long hair away from your face to avoid it getting in the way as you clean.
Step 3
Wash your hands before starting your face care routine so that you do not introduce bacteria, oil or dirt from your hands onto your face.
Step 4
Place your chosen cleanser on your hands and gently rub it onto your face. Wash using your fingers, not a washcloth, since a washcloth can irritate your skin. Rub the cleanser in gentle circles on your face, aiming to create soft suds. Rub for 10 seconds or less.
Step 5
Splash lukewarm water, not hot or cold, onto your face with your hands to remove the cleanser. Rinse thoroughly and remove all traces of cleanser. Leftover cleanser on your skin can irritate it.
Step 6
Use a mild abrasive scrub, If your face needs exfoliation, that includes polyethylene beads or sodium tetraborate decahydrate granules, which are both mild enough for sensitive skin.
Step 7
Pat your face dry with a towel gently, instead of rubbing it.
Step 8
Apply a lotion containing benzoyl peroxide to reduce oil and help keep skin clean and free of pimples.
Tips and Warnings
- Only wash your face twice a day, in the morning and evening, since washing more than this can dry out your skin.
