5 Things You Need to Know About Tissue Tightening

1. The Non-Surgical Facelift

Tissue tightening uses radio frequency energy in a non-invasive procedure to help promote the production of collagen in the skin, which in turn can help to tighten wrinkles and lift sagging skin due to natural aging or extreme weight loss. Tissue tightening procedures are quick and relatively easy, making them a great alternative to those who aren't ready to go under the knife.

2. Reality Check

As technology becomes more advanced, tissue tightening on areas such as the arms, thighs, buttocks and even the abdomen are becoming more common; however, most procedures are performed on the forehead, neck and cheeks. It is important to remember that you can reduce wrinkles with tissue tightening, but the results are generally modest and will never be as extreme as traditional plastic surgery procedures. If you are only looking for moderate changes in skin appearance, this procedure may be perfect for you.

3. Does it Hurt?

As with any medical procedure, it is important to know what to expect when getting tissue tightening. In most cases, the procedure is performed with no medications other than oral pain medications, particularly if you are nervous. While your skin may appear a bit irritated afterwards, with a little makeup and a helping of sunscreen, you should be able to return to your regular activities immediately.

4. A Word to the Wise

While the risks of tissue tightening tend to be mild, it is important to be aware that in addition to reddening of the skin, some people also experience swelling and tenderness for a few days following the procedure. While derma-surgeons work very hard to keep the settings low and perform multiple passes with the radio frequency machine to limit discomfort, occasionally the treatment may cause burns, blisters and even scarring. Although the more severe side effects are rare, make sure that your surgeon has the proper training and experience.

5. Getting Results

Don't expect immediate results, as it can take 2 to 6 months for the skin to produce enough new collagen to notice change. A few patients may see results in the weeks following the treatment, but generally, results appear slowly over time. While the results of tissue tightening are long-term, you may choose to have a follow-up procedure in the years following your first tissue tightening; however, remember that you may not see the full effects for as long as 6 months. If considering a second procedure, speak to your doctor about your options, risks and benefits of additional treatments.
