Goldenseal has been used for centuries to treat a number of issues. Goldenseal has antiseptic and antibiotic properties, and it is considered an immune booster, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. There are few studies proving the efficacy of goldenseal, but it also seems to have few or no side effects, so trying it out may be an option for many people.

Step 1

Talk to your doctor if you have high blood pressure or are taking medications such as tetracycline antibiotics and blood thinners. Pregnant or breastfeeding women and people with heart disease should not use goldenseal unless under the strict supervision of a physician.

Step 2

Choose the form of goldenseal that best fits your symptoms and lifestyle. Goldenseal is available in the form of tablets or capsules, as tinctures or as a liquid extract. Liquid forms of goldenseal are best for external applications, while tablets and capsules are best if you have to take several doses throughout the day while you're on the go.

Step 3

Start with 500 mg tablets or capsules up to three times a day. You can increase the dosage up to 1,000 mg if no side effects appear at the lower dosage. If you're using a tincture, start with 2 or 3 mL, up to three times a day. You can put the tincture directly under your tongue or add it to a cup of tea or some water. Goldenseal can be taken with or without food.

Step 4

Mix half a teaspoon of goldenseal tincture with one cup of sterile water to make an eyewash or to clean wounds. You can also add a quarter of a teaspoon of salt to the mix to clear out eye infections. Discard after a couple of days or if you see the mix becoming cloudy. The same mixture can be used as a mouthwash to treat sore gums or a tooth infection.

Step 5

Buy a supplement that combines goldenseal and echinacea (a common combination) to treat allergies, colds and the flu. Goldenseal can also soothe a sore throat, which makes it a popular remedy for upper respiratory infections. Strengths and dosages vary depending on the brand name, so be sure to read the labels in advance to avoid exceeding the recommended dosage.
