Lacrosse Equipment Rules

Lacrosse is a sport that was invented by Native Americans and has been played primarily by Americans and Canadians. In lacrosse, two teams of 10 players each try to hurl a hard rubber ball into a goal that is protected by a goalkeeper. The players catch and propel the ball with long sticks known as "crosses." The game has specific equipment requirements that give the player protection as well as help him play the game.

Lacrosse Stick

A lacrosse stick is used by all players. There are three types of lacrosse sticks and it depends on which position is played. Attacking players try to score goals and they use shorter sticks. The short stick is 40 to 42 inches long and it has a net on the end to catch and throw the lacrosse ball. The shorter stick is easier to maneuver and that makes it easier to get shots and passes off. Defensive players use sticks that are 52 to 72 inches long. The long "crosses" can cause problems for the attackers because they can deflect or block shots or passes easier than short ones. The goalkeeper uses a stick that is 40 to 72 inches.

Lacrosse Helmet

All players must wear protective helmets to play lacrosse. They cover the entire head. The top and back of the head are protected by hard plastic, similar to the type of material used on a football helmet. The front of the helmet is covered with a cage to prevent the stick or ball from impacting the face. The inside of the helmet is padded to lessen the impact of a blow to the head or a fall.

Shoulder Pads

All players must wear shoulder pads to protect the upper body. Lacrosse shoulder pads are lighter than the shoulder pads worn in football. That's because lacrosse players are running all over a field that measures 110 yards long by 60 yards wide. Heavier shoulder pads would weigh a player down over the course of a four-quarter lacrosse game.
