Large pores and oily skin frequently go hand-in-hand when it comes to skin types. Genetic traits passed on from family members generally cause large pores, and oily skin can result from a number of things, including diet, hormonal imbalances, stress, and cosmetics. Although large pores are often genetic and thus permanent, proper skincare can reduce their appearance. Similarly, you can change some of the lifestyle factors that cause your oily skin and reduce many of the symptoms by caring for it in the proper manner.

Step 1

Wash the face twice a day with a mild, oil-free, noncomedogenic cleanser made for oily skin. Be careful not to over-cleanse the skin, as this will cause the skin to produce more oil.

Step 2

Rinse the skin with cool water after cleansing. Cool water encourages the pores to close and appear smaller.

Step 3

Use a mild astringent after washing to tone the skin, remove excess oil, and shrink large pores. Avoid astringents with high alcohol content as they can cause excess dryness. Dry skin, in turn, produces more oil to self-hydrate, leaving your skin more oily than it was before. Witch hazel is a good natural astringent.

Step 4

Moisturize the skin every day with a light, oil-free, hypoallergenic, noncomedogenic facial moisturizer. Individuals with oily skin tend to forgo moisturizer, but dryness will cause the skin to produce more oil. Moisturizing after cleansing is just as important for oily skin as it is for normal and dry skin. Keep the facial moisturizer in a cool place so that when you apply it it has a pore-shrinking effect.

Step 5

Eat a healthy diet, avoiding foods high in fat, sugar and caffeine, all of which can lead to oilier skin and large pores.
