Breathing is one of the most important functions the body is required to do in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Because breath is measured in minutes, it's important to make sure that every breath taken is done properly. Deep breathing from the diaphragm is recommended over taking short breaths from the chest. There are several benefits gained from breathing the right way, and with just a few simple exercises a day, you can improve your overall health.

Lymphatic System Works Better

The lymphatic system protects the body from harmful diseases, viruses, bacteria and infections. As the body takes in toxins from the environment, the lymphatic system traps the toxins and clears them from bodily tissues, which are then removed from the body through apt flow and drainage. This waste removal process is triggered by deep breathing. In order to maintain the proper functioning of this system, deep breathing exercises should be incorporated into your daily routine.

Reduces Stress

Deep breathing is also known to be therapeutic in such ways as helping to relieve stress, and serving as a remedy during hyperventilation and anxiety disorders. When under a great deal of stress, people tend to take quick shallow breaths resulting in greater risks of developing hypertension. Taking a few minutes a day to work on deep breathing techniques serves as a great relaxation tool for clearing the mind and improving mental focus. Forms of Yoga and meditation use deep breathing exercises to help the body relieve stress and remain in a relaxed state.

Improves Physical Fitness

Energy is increased as a result from breathing deeply from the diaphragm and all the way up through the chest. Whether or not an individual achieves optimum fitness and reaches personal fitness goals is all dependent upon the level of energy exerted during exercise. Breathing from the diaphragm also requires the use of stomach muscles, which helps strengthen your abdominal and intestinal muscles. Individuals that are overweight typically have a much harder time breathing. Proper breathing techniques can increase your chances for weight loss. Celebrity trainer Jay Blahnik says, "Proper breathing during exercise helps in a few important ways. It makes cardiovascular training more efficient, helps with power and stability during strength and endurance training, and it fosters relaxation during mind/body and flexibility training... The most important thing is to avoid shallow breathing during cardio training whenever possible. Shallow breathing is an indicator that you are either working too hard or have not established a good breathing pattern for the activity you are doing."
