Overweight and obesity rates are growing across America. According to Palo Alto Medical Foundation, obesity is becoming increasingly common among adolescents. A study by researchers at the University of Tennessee and Memphis State University found that the average teen spends about 30 hours in front of the television weekly, often while eating junk food, leading to weight gain. To avoid the health risks associated with obesity, teens need to put more emphasis on exercising and getting physical activity to burn excess calories.

Team Sports

Soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, football and field hockey are all examples of team sports that will help get your teen moving. Team sports through schools are great exercise, because most teams practice daily after school for a couple of hours. Team sports also help teens form healthy, strong friendships, which can boost self-confidence.

Workout DVDs

Workout DVDs are an inexpensive and easy way for a teen to get a workout in the safety of her own home, or even room. A lot of teens feel self-conscious about their bodies, and working out in public may seem too overwhelming.

Dance

Many teenagers are experiencing their first school dances. Consider signing your teen up for dance classes. Dance class is an effective cardio workout. It will also help the teen feel more comfortable in her own skin and confident at school functions. Some teens may also enjoy dancing to their own favorite music in their room or the basement. Encourage your teen to invite her friends over for a dance party, and serve some healthy snacks.

Pets

Give your teen the responsibility of walking the family dog. If your teen is an animal lover and you do not have a dog, consider getting him one with the promise that he will walk it daily. This can help build responsibility and accountability. Make sure to thoroughly research and discuss this option with your family, because a pet is a major commitment.
