Hernias describe a condition in which a portion of the intestines is able to push through the connective tissue in the abdomen, known as the fascia. Hernias are usually characterized based on where the hernia has occurred; inguinal hernias are a result of the intestines pushing through into the groin region.
Bulge
For many patients, the first symptom of a hernia in the groin is a bulge in the groin. This bulge is the result of the intestines protruding into the groin area. The Mayo Clinic notes that this bulge can occur on either side of the pubic bone. The Mayo Clinic notes that this bulge may be swollen or tender. In men, the hernia may be able to protrude all the way into the scrotum. In this case, the inguinal hernia may be able to lead to a swelling within the scrotum. This swelling may be tender or very painful and can cause a noticeable lump to appear within the scrotum.
Pressure
Another symptom of a groin (inguinal) hernia, according to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disorders (NIDDK), is pressure or weakness within the groin area. This symptom is the result of the protrusion of the intestines into the groin area. When the intestines get into the groin area, the nerves can perceive that the intestinal tissue has pushed through the muscles of the abdomen. This is what is able to generate a feeling of pressure or weakness in the groin area. The sensation may be ambiguous because of the rarity of pain or pressure in the groin.
Strangulation
Medline notes that in some cases, a hernia of the groin can result in unusual twisting of the intestines, leading to a condition known as strangulation. A strangulated inguinal hernia can result in a medical emergency because of the importance of the intestines in the digestive system. Symptoms of a strangulated inguinal (groin) hernia include extreme tenderness around the abdominal bulge. Other symptoms include a fever, a rapid heart rate and pain that rapidly gets worse. Strangulated hernias can be life-threatening because the affected part of the intestines can die as a result of poor blood flow.
