Gaining weight after an eating disorder may be difficult. For starters, the National Organization for Women in California explains that eating disorders last forever, which means you might be feeling better, but the feelings and reactions towards foods will be there all your life. Eating too much too quickly in order to gain weight might be hurtful, as there's a chance your body (or your mind) will rebel against the weight gain. Instead, focus on changing eating habits and work towards gaining weight slowly and steadily.

Step 1

Consult with a nutritionist or dietitian if possible. A professional can help you put together a plan that provides all necessary nutrients for you to gain strength and feel better. More importantly, a professional can help you feel at ease that you will be eating just as much as you need and won't be gaining more weight than needed.

Step 2

Eat small meals often. Eating disorders tend to affect metabolism, slowing down the way your body processes and uses nutrients. By eating frequently, you force your body to work and stay active. Also, eating small meals frequently (rather than a couple of large ones) will be easier on your stomach, which might not be used to eating so much food.

Step 3

Incorporate high-density, high-calorie foods into your diet, but do it slowly. For example, eat oatmeal instead of fruits for breakfast and have nuts or dairy products as snacks. Don't force yourself to eat too much at once, and avoid foods that are high in calories but low in nutrients, such as fast food and fatty snacks like chips.

Step 4

Drink nutrition shakes such as Ensure. They are high in calories and nutrients and will help you gain weight without making you feel too full. Shakes are also a good idea if you have trouble eating solid food, either because you're not used to it or because your stomach is having a hard time digesting it.

Step 5

Drink fruit juices, milk (or chocolate milk) and sport drinks to add calories to your diet. Avoid sodas, as they contain too much sugar and no nutrients. You should still be drinking water, but adding drinks that contain calories will help you gain weight faster and more easily.
