Millions of people suffer stress--of one type or another--every day. Work, school, family, illness and finances are some common triggers for stress. Unfortunately, stress is not only bad for your mental state, it takes a toll on your body as well. Chronic stress can cause illness, anxiety, weight gain, weight loss, depression, heart issues, skin problems, sleep disturbance and digestive problems. It is important to recognize the onset of stress, what triggers it and how you can relieve it.
Support System
For some people, one of the best ways to alleviate stress is to have a "vent" session with a friend or family member. Talking to someone you trust about what is bothering you will keep you from ignoring your issues. If you know someone who gives good advice or someone who is a good listener, consider talking to them when you feel stressed.
Meditation
Being in a quiet space and meditating is a great way to get rid of stress. Meditation lowers heart rate, decreases respiratory rate and decreases muscle tension. Most of the time, meditation is done sitting. You focus on your breathing, a word or a phrase. Once you have practiced meditation, you will be able to do it while standing up or walking. This is a more convenient way of relieving stress.
Exercise
Exercise is one of the best ways to alleviate stress. Not only is it healthy for your body, exercise relieves tense muscles, stimulates blood flow and releases endorphins, a chemical released into the blood stream that gives you a happy and positive feeling.
Journal
Writing down your thoughts, worries and grievances in a daily journal is a great stress reliever, especially if you do not like to talk about your feelings. Writing in a journal will allow you to express yourself and prevent you from bottling up your issues, which can lead to more stress and anxiety.
Sleep
It is important to get plenty of sleep to allow your body to relax and recover. Depriving your body of sleep will only exacerbate the problem.
Avoid Alcohol and Caffeine
Alcohol can sometimes help mask the stress temporarily, but the aftereffects of alcohol only add to stress. Alcohol is also a depressant and affects your body and health. Caffeine is a stimulant and can keep the body from relaxing. Caffeine also prevents you from getting quality sleep.
Balance Your Time
With work, family, school and other responsibilities, it is sometimes difficult to balance your time. It is important to take time for yourself. Make time to do something you enjoy, such as working on your coin collection or getting a manicure. Organize your time so you do not end up stressing out about deadlines, meetings and appointments you can't make.
