Pollen grains are small particles produced by plants that help plants reproduce. Unfortunately, pollen does more than fertilize plants; it also causes allergies in millions of people. As plants are blooming, pollen is spread through the air and can enter your mouth and nose. When you are hypersensitive to pollen, this causes you to develop many uncomfortable symptoms. Allergy symptoms include a stuffy or runny nose, red and itchy eyes, cough, sneezing and sinus pressure or pain. If you suffer from allergies and are looking for relief, it may not be necessary to turn to pills or shots. There are some excellent natural remedies that greatly alleviate the symptoms caused by pollen allergies.
Step 1
At the beginning of allergy season you should pollen-proof your home. Make your home a pollen-free zone by closing doors and windows, and using an air conditioner with a new HEPA filter.
Step 2
When you return to your home, take a shower and also wash any clothes you wore outside, according to the Family Doctor website. This will ensure that you are not carrying pollen around on your hair or sleeping with it on your pillow case.
Step 3
Use an isotonic nasal rinse daily to clean your nasal passageways, says the Fun Times Guide Health website. To make the solution, dissolve 1/4 tsp. salt in one cup of warm water. Pour the saline solution through one of your nostrils. Repeat this for the second nostril.
Step 4
Start eating spicier foods, as they will thin out the mucus your body produces and therefore clear out your sinuses. Chili pepper, wasabi, ginger and onions are all excellent spicy flavors to add to your meals.
Step 5
Start eating honey that is made by local bees. The honey will contain tiny amounts of pollen from flowers in your area. By inoculating yourself with small amounts of the pollen that you are allergic to at the beginning of allergy season, your body will become less sensitive to the pollen when you are naturally exposed to it.
