5 Things You Need to Know About Slowing Your Metabolism

1. Work With What You Have

Metabolism is a lot like weight and noses--we never like what we have and look for ways to change it. In addition to the metabolic rate that we are born with, other factors play into the rate of how we burn calories. They range from sex and age to how much lean muscle we carry. Speeding up the metabolism through exercise and diet can work to help you lose weight. However, for people who burn too many calories and run out of energy too quickly or cannot bulk up enough, you will need to find ways to slow down your metabolism, which will ultimately lead to weight gain.

2. Check With the Doctor First

If you are having trouble gaining weight no matter how much you eat, a doctor should first check you out before you attempt any weight gaining procedures. You may be anemic or have a malnutrition disorder that can be treated with medication. Your stomach may not be processing food correctly and you may cause more harm by upping your caloric intake.

3. Get the Right Numbers

Look at the kinds of food you are eating. Maybe too many of your calories are empty and your naturally high metabolism runs through them like water. Make sure you are getting at least 6 to 10 servings of quality whole grains every day. Avoid white bread and pasta. You'll want two to three servings of protein and dairy every day. In your case, you should not worry about fat at this point. Also, make sure you balance your diet with fruits and vegetables, at least three or four servings of each per day.

4. Eat More Often

Spread out your food intake to three complete meals a day, with snacks in between. Sit down to eat so that your body can absorb the nutrients. Many people with high metabolisms are constantly on the go, which only adds to the battle to gain weight. Do not drink too much water, which can flush a lot of the calories out of your system before they have a chance to take root.

5. Work out Hard

Work out to build muscles. Strength training and weight lifting are better choices than aerobic activity that burns calories quicker. Muscles also weigh more than fat and will utilize the extra calories more efficiently. Also, you will need to be careful not to turn all your extra calories into fat while you are increasing your food intake.
