Seroquel 200 mg is a dosage strength of Seroquel, an FDA-approved prescription medication for the treatment of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It can also be used for certain types of depression. Seroquel is manufactured by AstraZeneca and is available in other strengths: 25mg, 50mg, 100mg, 300mg and 400mg. Seroquel is also known by the generic name of quetiapine.
Function
Seroquel 200mg interacts with certain cells in the body to promote mood stabilization in bipolar disorder and to treat the symptoms of schizophrenia.
Administration
Seroquel can be taken with or without food. It is available in tablet form and the prescribed dosage is based on the disorder being treated. Seroquel is usually started at the lowest possible dose and then increased gradually over a few weeks until a patient is stabilized.
Side Effects
Seroquel can cause a change in blood pressure, an increase in heart rate, weight gain, vomiting, nausea, constipation, fatigue, pain, nasal congestion and increased agitation.
Overdose
Overdose can lead to general weakness and tiredness, and possibly coma. Patients may also experience seizures, inability to speak clearly, delirium, difficulty breathing and heart issues. The effects of overdose usually last about a day; however, all cases of overdose require immediate medical attention.
Warning
During the first few months of therapy, as well as during dosage changes, patients may become more depressed and suicidal. Seroquel should never be discontinued abruptly but gradually decreased to avoid symptoms of withdrawal such as irritability, sleeping disorders, hallucinations and depression.
