Turmeric, a spice that is often used in preparing Indian food, has medicinal properties that go far beyond giving curry its distinctive color and flavor. Researchers at several universities are studying its active ingredient, curcumin, as a treatment to help fight infections, lower bad cholesterol levels, treat digestive problems and even slow the spread of some forms of cancer.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Researchers at Stanford University report on the Wellsphere website that turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties that are believed to be effective treatments for wounds. These properties can help relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis, according to doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The Maryland researchers also report that a study of people using the spice as a treatment for the condition show significant reductions in pain and disability associated with the condition.

Lowers Cholesterol

Stanford researchers say studies suggest that the high curcumin levels found in turmeric contain properties that help lower the level of bad cholesterol in the body. Scientists at the University of Maryland add that these properties also can help prevent the buildup of plaque in the arteries and prevent blood clots from forming in the circulatory system, a leading cause of heart disease and stroke.

Cancer Treatment

Researchers at both the University of Maryland and Harvard medical schools say early research studies indicate that turmeric may be an effective treatment for battling some forms of cancer, although they caution that more research is needed before this can be proved. The results of preliminary studies suggest that including turmeric in the diet may be effective in combating both bone and pancreatic cancer, Harvard's Beth Israel researchers say. They also report that studies conducted on mice suggest that turmeric may block the growth of melanoma and inhibits the spread of breast cancer into the lungs. Physicians at Stanford University add that the herb also may help slow the progression of prostate cancer.

Digestive Aid

Curcumin has been shown to enhance the production of bile in the gallbladder, and researchers at the Maryland university believe this could be effective in helping prevent indigestion. Physicians at Harvard University's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center say studies show that turmeric can also be an effective treatment for many stomach conditions including discomfort, bloating, appetite loss, nausea and gas.

A Powerful Antioxidant

Stanford researchers say studies suggest that high curcumin levels in turmeric have antioxidant properties that help remove free radicals in the body. The removal of these free radicals help prevent cellular damage and are an effective way to protect the body from chronic conditions like heart disease and stroke.
