Anxiety and depression are both a normal part of everyday living. When they become overwhelming, though, they need to be treated. Although many physicians will prescribe medications for these conditions, there are holistic treatments that harness the healing power of the body and brain to bring relief from anxiety and depression.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an effective treatment for both anxiety and depression, according to a study cited at acupuncturebydrlee.com. The study reported that 70 percent of people receiving acupuncture felt better while 65 percent of those taking the prescription drug Elavil felt improvement after five months of treatment. The acupuncture recipients reported no side effects.

Meditation

Meditation can soothe frazzled nerves, redirect breathing and calm the mind, all useful techniques in treating anxiety and depression. Anxious people breathe very shallowly and the deep breathing of meditation can re-oxygenate the blood. Meditation is also a tool to treat depression, according to an article by Dr. Gabrielle J. Melin at mayoclinic.com. She suggests using affirmations through the meditation to bolster mood and confidence.

Herbs

Herbs such as Kava Kava and Valerian Root are used to treat anxiety and insomnia. St. John's Wort has shown efficacy in treating depression. Check with your doctor before beginning an herbal regimen as most herbs have side effects and drug interaction precautions. Other herbs that may be helpful for depression and anxiety, according to holisticonline.com, include licorice, gingko and ginseng.

Supplements

Consider taking supplements to treat anxiety and depression. Healthyplace.com suggests taking folate, omega-3 fatty acid, SAM-e, tryptophan, selenium, vitamin C and inositol to combat depression. Inositol and portions of B-complex have shown some efficacy for treating anxiety, according to an article in "American Family Physician" magazine.
