Kids bite their nails for a number of reasons: because they're stressed, because they are bored or sometimes because it provides an escape from a scary situation. Whatever the reason, nail biting is not only unsightly but it can also cause bacteria to get into the mouth. Rather than ordering your child to stop the behavior, it's better to take an approach that is gentler and that helps the child understand why she should quit.

Step 1

Keep your child's nails short. If they are cut and filed regularly, he will be less tempted to bite them. Make sure they are clean and have no rough edges, as this can also tempt them to chew on them. If that's not enough, consider applying clear nail polish. The taste of it will discourage kids from biting their nails.

Step 2

Make a big deal out of keeping hands and nails in good condition. Take your child to get a manicure next time you're getting one. Or try colorful nail polish at home. Boys might be reluctant to get their nails painted but girls will probably enjoy a manicure session with Mom.

Step 3

Provide alternatives. Pay attention to when and why your child bites her nails and then look for things she could be doing instead. For example, if your child bites her nails during long car rides or while waiting for a doctor's appointment, bring crayons and a coloring book along to keep her hands (and mind) occupied.

Step 4

Strike a deal. Explain to your child why biting her nails is bad and ask if she would like to quit. Don't force the issue, as this will probably lead to resistance rather than cooperation. If your child agrees to try to quit, offer to "pay" for every day she goes without biting her nails. Payment can be something as simple as a sticker, which can be collected until a specific number is reached and then a larger prize (going to the movies, getting ice cream) is awarded.
