Head lice is an extremely common problem among schoolchildren in the United States, affecting around 12 million kids each year, according to DrGreene.com. Lice are easily transferred from person to person, and they reproduce so fast that even one louse in your hair can lead to a full-blown infestation in no time. This can be a hassle to get out of your kid's hair and can force the child to miss school days, but there are natural remedies in addition to medical treatments that can eliminate lice.
Step 1
Mix 3 tbsp. of olive oil, 1 tsp. of tea tree oil and 1 tsp. of rosemary or eucalyptus oil into a small amount of shampoo--the amount you would normally use in your hair.
Step 2
Scrub the mixture into your hair, or your child's hair, the same way you would with regular shampoo.
Step 3
Leave the mixture in the hair for at least 30 minutes. Place a tight-fitting shower cap over your hair--this traps the mixture and lice together.
Step 4
Rinse your hair thoroughly, and wash it with shampoo once or twice to get all the oils you. Consider repeating the treatment after fully cleaning your hair, if your lice condition is bad.
Step 5
Repeat this treatment daily until your hair is lice-free.
Tips and Warnings
- Thoroughly wash all bedding and clothing on the same day that you apply the shampoo treatment, to avoid reinfection.
- This mixture has strong fumes and can burn your eyes. Make sure not to let the mixture run down into your eyes. Flush your eyes for 15 minutes if the mixture gets into them.
