Razor bumps and ingrown hairs are usually the result of a close shave. The Mayo Clinic states that in men, the beard area and neck are the most common places for ingrown hair. In women, the pubic area, underarms and legs are the most common locations. The most effective way to prevent ingrown hairs is to never remove any hair. However, if you must shave, there are things you can do to minimize the risk of getting these itchy, painful areas of irritation.
Step 1
Prepare your skin and hair for the shave by soaking it in warm water for five minutes. If you are shaving your face, place a towel soaked in hot water against your face for five minutes.
Step 2
Place a layer of shaving gel on your skin if you are using a traditional razor to shave. With an electric razor, apply a pre-shave lotion to the area. Shaving gel and a pre-shave lotion help keep a barrier between your skin and the razor.
Step 3
Remove the hair using either a single bladed razor or an electric razor. Regardless of the type of razor you use, you should shave going in the same direction as the hair grows using only gentle pressure, states Epigee. Pressing the razor into your skin increases the chance that you will get an ingrown hair. As you shave, go over each area only once.
Step 4
Rinse your skin using cool water after you shave to minimize irritation.
Step 5
Pat your skin dry or allow it to air dry to minimize the immediate irritation.
Step 6
Keep your skin clean and moisturized after shaving. Use products that won't clog your pores to keep the skin clean and moisturized. Bacteria, oil, sweat and dead skin may contribute to ingrown hairs.
Tips and Warnings
- Use a soft toothbrush to tease hair away from your skin as it grows. If you do this, use small circular motions and avoid any areas where an ingrown hair is already present.
- If you get ingrown hairs every time you shave, contact your doctor to determine if you need prescription medications to control this condition.
