Implanon (etonogestrel implant) is a progestin-only contraceptive that is implanted underneath the skin of your upper arm. This contraceptive device works by inhibiting ovulation and altering cervical mucous in order to prevent pregnancy. Implanon is good for up to three years. According to the manufacturer, you should not use Implanon if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant, have or have had blood clots, have unexplained vaginal bleeding, have liver disease, have or have had breast cancer, or if you are allergic to anything in Implanon.
Menstrual Irregularity and Vaginitis
You may experience menstrual irregularity while using Implanon. Menstrual periods can become irregular and unpredictable. Menstrual bleeding may increase or decrease and you may experience spotting between periods. Menstrual irregularity may lessen over time as your body adjusts to the hormone in Implanon.
You may also experience vaginitis while using Implanon. This is an inflammation and infecton of the vagina and surrounding tissue. If you experience redness, itching or swelling of the perineum, contact your gynecologist.
Headache
Headache is a common side effect of Implanon. This occurs because your body is adjusting to the progestin in Implanon. You may treat your headache with acetaminophen or ibuprofen as per your physician's consent. If your headache becomes severe and is accompanied by dizziness or visual changes, it may be a sign of something more serious. Contact your health care provider.
Acne
Dermatologic side effects have included acne, reports Drugs.com. The hormone in Implanon may make some women more prone to developing acne. If acne becomes bothersome, contact your dermatologist.
Weight Gain
Some women may experience an increase in weight while using Implanon. To help avoid associated weight gain, eat a sensible diet and avoid fatty and high calorie foods. Exercise at least 3-4 times per week, raising your heart rate for a minimum of 30 minutes to achieve the full cardiovascular effect of exercise. Cardiovascular exercise will aid in weight control.
Breast Pain
You may experience breast pain while using Implanon. This occurs due to the progestin in Implanon. Breast pain should diminish over time as your body gets used to Implanon.
