The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) describes depression as a common but serious disorder that affects the sufferer and the people around him. It is believed to be caused by a combination of physical, genetic, environmental and psychological factors that can vary from person to person. Fortunately, there are several ways to get rid of depression that can be used individually or combined if a single approach is not effective.

Counseling

Cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy are two forms of counseling that have been proven effective in treating depression, according to NIMH. Both of these therapeutic methods teach clients how to manage negative thoughts and make positive life changes.
These treatments get rid of depression by helping a person eliminate the cause if it is mainly environmental, or manage symptoms if the illness is being triggered by a variety of causes.

Medication

Antidepressant medication works on brain chemicals that are believed to play a causal role in depression. This medication usually targets serotonin and norepinephrine, while some affect dopamine levels.
If a particular antidepressant does not get rid of depression, the patient may be helped by a different drug. NIMH research shows that patients who are not helped by the first medication they try will significantly raise their chances of beating depression by trying or adding another drug.

St. John's Wort

St. John's Wort is an herb that is available without a prescription. It is used extensively in both the United States and Europe as a natural way to get rid of depression, according to NIMH. Studies on its effectiveness are mixed, but there is much anecdotal evidence that it can relieve depression. It can interact with certain medications, so check with your doctor or pharmacist if you plan to try it.

Exercise

The Mayo Clinic cites physical exercise as an effective way to get rid of depression. It explains that a workout increases body temperature, which can be calming, plus exercise releases neurotransmitters and endorphins that can elevate a person's mood.
Exercise also fights certain depression symptoms. For example, it may help a person get out of the house and social interactions, gets her mind off worries and builds self-confidence.
