Cyclosporine eyedrops are indicated for the treatment of decreased tears that result from the inflammation of the clear covering of the eye due to symptoms of Keratoconjunctivitis sicca, also referred to as chronic dry eyes. Chronic dry eyes is a disease that does not go away unless it is treated and maintained. Chronic dry eyes is associated with pain and discomfort and can affect the quality of life of the sufferer. Cyclosporine is beneficial in increasing tear production and in reducing associated symptoms and effects of the disease.

Chronic Dry Eyes

In chronic dry eye disease, the body does not make adequate tears, and so the eyes are unprotected. If the eye remains without protection, the surface becomes damaged and keeps worsening until treatment is received. If lack of treatment persists, the damage will become severe enough to cause a weakening of vision as well as discomfort and pain.

Relieves Irritation of the Eyes

Cyclosporine relieves irritation of the eyes and the feeling of a foreign object in the eyes that results from lack of moisture. It also relieves the eye of irritation from sunlight that develops as the cornea gets damaged and the eyes become extra sensitive to sunlight.

Reduces Inflammation of the Sinus

Chronic dry eyes can lead to the building of pressure behind the eye as well as inflammation of the sinus (sinusitis). This can be painful, and pain medications will not totally relieve all symptoms. In addition, pain medications have associated risks. By reducing dryness and inflammation, cyclosporine can relieve the pain caused by sinusitis and sinus pressure.

Less Eye Infections

Eye infection can occur frequently when the clear outer covering of the eye (cornea) is damaged from irritation due to dryness. Cyclosporine relieves dryness by increasing natural tear production that moisturizes and protects the eyes, thus decreasing the incidence of eye infections.

Saves Eyesight

Blood vessels can sometimes grow around the cornea as a result of damage caused by dryness. Inappropriate growth of blood vessels will obstruct vision and lead to weakened or loss of eyesight.
Blurred vision is also a common symptom of dry and inflamed corneas. Cyclosporine reduces inflammation and increases the moisture content of the eye, thereby improving visual acuity and clarity.

Treats Inflammation

Chronic dryness of the eye can lead to inflammation, which causes itchy and painful eyes. Cyclosporine has anti-inflammatory properties that relieve inflammation and eliminate associated risks and discomforts.

Reduces Scar Formation on Eyes

The clear covering of the eye (cornea) can thicken in prolonged dryness and cause growth of scar tissues over the eye. This can cause loss of vision. Cyclosporine reduces dryness and subsequently decreases the incidence of scar formation and vision loss.

Alternative Options to Cyclosporine

Artificial tears, which are liquid drops formulated to mimic natural tears, are good alternatives. Artificial tears can be applied as often as needed with minimal side effects. Lubricant ointments can also be applied before sleeping at night to keep the eyes moisturized in the daytime. Both artificial tears and lubricant ointment can be found over the counter. Another alternative is to avoid dry and dusty environments. Warm showers and humidifiers have also been shown to be beneficial in controlling symptoms of dry eyes.
